Lottery Odds Explained: What Your Real Chances Are in Powerball, EuroMillions and More
Published
Imagine a single motorway lane filled with one dollar bills laid end to end. Somewhere along it, one bill has a mark on it. You get to stop the car once, step out and pick up one bill. If it is the marked one, you win the Powerball jackpot.
How long is the road? With 292,201,338 bills of about 15.6 centimetres each, it runs for roughly 45,000 kilometres. That is more than once around the Earth at the equator. That is what "1 in 292 million" looks like when you stop treating it as a number.
Where the numbers come from
Lottery odds are not estimates and they are not secrets. They come from simple counting. In a game where you choose 5 numbers from 1 to 69, the number of possible combinations is the number of ways to choose 5 items from 69, which mathematicians write as C(69,5). That is 11,238,513 combinations. Powerball then adds a separate pool: one Powerball from 1 to 26. Multiply the two, and you get 292,201,338 possible tickets. Only one combination wins the jackpot.
Every lottery works the same way. The size of the pools and how many numbers you pick from each decide the odds, nothing else.
Jackpot odds in the world's biggest lotteries
| Lottery | Format | Jackpot odds (1 in) |
|---|---|---|
| SuperEnalotto | 6 from 90 | 622,614,630 |
| Powerball | 5 from 69 + 1 from 26 | 292,201,338 |
| Mega Millions | 5 from 70 + 1 from 24 | 290,472,336 |
| EuroMillions | 5 from 50 + 2 from 12 | 139,838,160 |
| EuroJackpot | 5 from 50 + 2 from 12 | 139,838,160 |
| UK Lotto | 6 from 59 | 45,057,474 |
| Lotto 6/49 (Canada) | 6 from 49 | 13,983,816 |
Two things jump out. First, SuperEnalotto is more than twice as hard to win as Powerball, which is why its jackpots can grow for more than a year without a winner. Second, EuroMillions and EuroJackpot have exactly the same jackpot odds, because their formats are mathematically identical.
What these numbers really mean
The most useful way to read lottery odds is to stop thinking about winning and start thinking about time. If you bought one Powerball line for every draw, three draws a week, you would expect to wait on average around 1.9 million years for a jackpot. A EuroMillions player buying two lines a week would wait on average around 1.3 million years.
That is not a reason never to play. It is a reason to see the ticket for what it is: a small payment for a few days of daydreaming, with a very remote chance of something extraordinary.
Smaller prizes and overall odds
Lotteries also publish the odds of winning any prize at all, and these are much friendlier, often somewhere between 1 in 10 and 1 in 25 depending on the game. Most of those wins are small, sometimes just the cost of the ticket back. The overall odds make a game feel generous; the jackpot odds tell you how rare the life-changing win really is. Both are true at the same time.
Myths that do not change your odds
- Hot and cold numbers. Balls have no memory. A number drawn last week is exactly as likely to come up this week as any other.
- Patterns and birthdays. A line of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 has exactly the same chance as any other combination. Birthdays do not raise your odds, although they can lower your share if you win, because many people choose numbers under 31.
- Systems and software. No system changes the odds of a fair draw. Buying more lines raises your chance in direct proportion to how many you buy, and so does the cost.
- Lucky shops. Shops that sell many winners usually sell many tickets. That is all.
How to use the odds when you play
Knowing the odds does not mean you should not play. It helps you play better. Treat every ticket as entertainment with a fixed price. If you enjoy the build up of a huge Powerball or Mega Millions jackpot, enjoy it. If you prefer more frequent small wins, games with smaller pools give you better odds at the top prize, even if the jackpot is smaller. And choose numbers that are less popular, such as numbers above 31, if you want to reduce the chance of sharing a prize, without pretending that it makes you more likely to win.
The bottom line
Lottery odds are fixed, public and easy to calculate. They are also astonishingly long. Playing with your eyes open means enjoying the story, keeping the spend small and never confusing hope with a plan.
