Lottoland Review: How Lottery Betting Works and What to Check
Published
Lottoland is one of the best known names in online lottery betting. The key point to understand before you play is that Lottoland does not buy lottery tickets. You place a bet on the outcome of an official draw, and if your numbers win, Lottoland pays you, not the official lottery. This review explains how that works, how large jackpots are covered, which licences Lottoland lists and what to check before you sign up.
Lottoland at a glance
- Type of service: lottery betting (bets on the results of official draws)
- Founded: 2013, headquartered in Gibraltar
- Operator (as stated by Lottoland): EU Lotto Ltd, licensed by the Government of Gibraltar and regulated by the Gibraltar Gambling Commissioner (licences RGL 085 and RGL 066)
- Other regulators listed by Lottoland: the UK Gambling Commission and the Revenue Commissioners in Ireland
- Who pays prizes: Lottoland, with large jackpots backed by insurance
- Also offered: scratchcards, casino games and, since 2019, sports betting
How lottery betting works
With a betting site you never hold an official ticket. Instead:
- You pick a lottery, for example EuroJackpot or Powerball, and choose your numbers.
- You pay Lottoland's price for the bet line.
- Your bet is settled on the numbers drawn in the official draw.
- If you win, the prize is paid by Lottoland according to the prize structure it publishes for that game.
Lottoland states that it acts in the name of the player when placing bets, that it is not an official lottery operator and that it is not affiliated with the official lotteries. The draw results are the same, but the legal relationship is different: your contract is with Lottoland.
How big jackpots are paid
A betting company has to be able to pay a jackpot of hundreds of millions. Lottoland says it covers this risk with insurance, and that part of the price of each bet goes towards the policy. It also explains that when an official jackpot becomes extremely large, insurance premiums rise and the price of a bet line can rise with them. According to its terms, top tier prizes are paid in annuities or as a discounted lump sum at Lottoland's choice, so read the payout rules for the game you play.
Licensing and where you can play
Lottoland lists licences and regulators in Gibraltar, the United Kingdom and Ireland. Rules differ a lot between countries. In Germany, for example, the state lottery companies have long considered bets on lottery results to be against the German gambling treaty; in March 2024 Lottoland received a separate licence from the German regulator to broker state licensed online lotteries. Always check which company and licence apply to the version of the site you see in your country.
Costs and offers
Prices are set by Lottoland, not by the official lottery, so a bet line can cost more or less than an official ticket. Lottoland also runs its own games and promotions that do not exist in the official lotteries. Compare the price per line and read the conditions of any bonus before you accept it.
Pros and cons
Pros

Cons
- You do not own an official ticket; prizes come from Lottoland
- Prices can rise when official jackpots are extremely high
- Top prizes may be paid as an annuity or a discounted lump sum at the operator's choice
- Availability and rules depend heavily on your country
Lottoland or a ticket courier?
If you want an official ticket with a scanned copy, a courier such as TheLotter is the closer match; our TheLotter review covers that model. If you are comfortable with a bet on the result and like the extra games, Lottoland is built for that. AgentLotto offers both models for different games.
Our verdict
Lottoland is a large and established lottery betting brand that is open about its model: you bet on results, and Lottoland pays winners with insurance behind the biggest prizes. The things to understand before you play are the difference between a bet and a ticket, the payout rules for top prizes and which licence applies where you live.
